Why the best driving sunglasses are not polarized

Polarized lenses are sold as the premium choice. Behind the wheel, they are usually the wrong one. Here is why the safest driving lens is deliberately non-polarized — and what it does instead.

Ask ten people what makes a good pair of driving sunglasses and nine will say polarized. It sounds technical, it costs more, so it must be better. After thirty years in the optical trade, I can tell you: on the water, yes. In the car, no — and the reason sits right in front of you, on your dashboard.

The polarization paradox

A polarized filter blocks light waves that vibrate horizontally — exactly the kind that bounces off water. But your navigation screen, digital dashboard and head-up display emit polarized light of their own. Put a polarized lens in between and the screen darkens, distorts or disappears entirely. Some drivers also see rainbow patterns in the windscreen itself, caused by stress in the glass. None of this is a defect. It is simply the wrong tool for the job.

What road glare actually is

Glare on the road is rarely the mirror-flat reflection you get on a lake. It is brightness from above: a low sun, a bright sky, light scattering through haze. The lower half of your view — the tarmac, your instruments — needs clarity, not darkness. That asymmetry is the key insight behind a proper driving lens.

The dégradé answer

Are polarized lenses forbidden for driving? No — but they can hide your dashboard, dim LED displays and reveal stress patterns in windscreens. Most professional drivers and pilots choose non-polarized for exactly that reason.

Can I wear sunglasses at dusk or at night? A dark lens, no. A light contrast lens like DriveVision® Amber is designed for low light: it filters haze and oncoming glare while keeping the road bright.
